According to the National Sleep Foundation, quality sleep is critical for a person’s overall health and well-being. Unfortunately, most people are not getting the sleep that they need due to a variety of sleep disorders.

In fact, research shows that more than 40 million Americans suffer from a sleep disorder and most of those go undiagnosed and untreated. Quality Sleep Solutions can diagnose and treat a multitude of sleep disorders.

Symptoms We Treat

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by interruptions in breathing while sleeping. The only way to get a true diagnosis is with a sleep study.

However, some of the most common symptoms of this condition include:

  • Loud snoring
  • Difficulty focusing/concentrating while awake
  • Gasping for air/interruptions in breathing while sleeping
  • Waking up with a dry mouth
  • Morning headaches
  • Irritability
  • Insomnia/hypersomnia

Insomnia

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep throughout the night. Most adults experience acute insomnia, lasting for a few days or weeks, due to stress, trauma, or other factors. However, in some cases, insomnia is chronic- lasting for a month or more.

Symptoms of insomnia include:

  • Difficulty falling/staying asleep
  • Waking early
  • Not feeling rested after sleeping
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Depression/anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty focusing/paying attention
  • Difficulty remembering
  • Worrying about sleep

Insomnia may be a primary issue, a symptom of another issue, or the result of another medical condition or medication.

Snoring

According to research, nearly everyone snores at some point. There are several potential causes for acute snoring including alcohol consumption, sleeping position, nasal congestion, and weight gain. However, for some, snoring is a chronic issue that could indicate a more serious problem.

Some of the most common symptoms of snoring include:

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Pauses in breathing while sleeping
  • Morning headaches
  • Gasping/choking while sleeping
  • Sore throat upon waking
  • Morning headaches
  • Restless sleep
  • Nighttime chest pain
  • Poor attention span
  • Reduced performance at work/school
  • For children, behavioral issues
  • High blood pressure
  • Disrupting partner’s sleep

Night Terrors

Night terrors are a sleep disorder characterized by episodes of intense fear, screaming, and/or flailing while sleeping. This condition is often paired with sleepwalking. An episode can last from a few seconds to several minutes- sometimes longer. Research indicates that night terrors primarily affect children, who outgrow it by their teen years- very few adults experience this sleep disorder.

The most common symptoms of night terrors include:

  • Sitting up in bed, appearing frightened
  • Screaming/shouting
  • Kicking/thrashing
  • Staring wide-eyed
  • Difficult to wake up
  • Be confused if woken up
  • May get out of bed and wander around or be aggressive if blocked/restrained
  • Little to no memory of the event the following morning

Periodic Limb Movement

Periodic limb movement disorder is a condition characterized by repetitive twitching, jerking, or cramping of the lower limbs. These movements happen every 5 to 90 seconds for up to an hour. The movements are disruptive to sleep, even if the person does not wake up, causing daytime sleepiness/fatigue.

This condition can occur at any age but is rare in children, and the risk of developing this disorder increases with age. The most common symptoms include:

  • Tightening/bending/flexing of the big toe, ankle, or knee on one or both legs
  • Daytime fatigue/sleepiness

Sleepwalking

Sleepwalking is a condition characterized by walking around while sleeping. This condition is more common in children than adults. Isolated occurrences don’t indicate a serious issue or require treatment. However, if sleepwalking is chronic, there may be an underlying cause.

The most common symptoms of sleepwalking include:

  • Getting out of bed/walking around
  • Glazed/glassy-eyed expression
  • Difficult to wake during an episode
  • Sit up in bed and open eyes
  • No memory of the episode the following morning

We use Modern Sleep Diagnostics methods to Treat Sleep Apnea and Sleep Disorders

Dr. Ammons uses modern sleep diagnostic methods to diagnose and treat sleep disorders. These methods have been approved by the Academy of Sleep Medicine. Some of the diagnostic methods we use include:

At-Home Sleep Test

The WatchPAT300 is the same device used by the May Clinic. This device is portable and offers comprehensive sleep information to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. It measures your heart rate, blood oxygen levels, chest motion, snoring, respiratory events, and cycles of activity/rest. The results will be interpreted by a board-certified sleep physician.
